From Egg to Menace: Understanding the Mosquito Life Cycle

Here in the Carolinas, mosquito season doesn't just bring annoying bites but rather a constant battle against these persistent pests. At Palmetto Exterminators, we believe the best defense starts with knowledge. That's why we're breaking down the mosquito life cycle and showing how our Mosquito Barrier Treatments can protect you and your family all season long.

The Mosquito Life Cycle: A Crash Course

Mosquitoes aren't born able to fly. In fact, they go through a fascinating (and frustrating) transformation called complete metamorphosis. Metamorphosis means they pass through four very distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Let's take a closer look:

1. Egg Stage

Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in or near standing water—even a bottle cap's worth is enough.

  • Time to hatch: 24-48 hours in warm temperatures (~80°F)

  • Resilience: Many eggs can survive weeks or months if conditions aren't right

2. Larva ("Wriggler")

These little swimmers hang out at the surface, breathing through siphons and feeding on microorganisms. They're active, vulnerable, and entirely water-dependent.

  • Duration: As few as 4 days in warm water; up to 2 weeks in cooler temps

  • Control point: This is a prime stage to target with larvicides or natural predators

3. Pupa ("Tumbler")

This non-feeding but very mobile stage is when transformation into an adult begins. They still need water to breathe and develop.

  • Duration: 1-3 days, temperature-dependent

  • Intervention point: Draining water now can immediately halt development

4. Adult

After emerging from the pupal case, adults dry and harden their wings, ready to fly off—often at dawn or dusk. Males feed on nectar; females search for blood to produce eggs.

  • Lifespan: Males live about a week, and females can live for several weeks

  • Control point: Once airborne, somebody must target adult mosquitoes directly

Why Timing Is Everything in Mosquito Control

The mosquito life cycle can be completed in as little as one week under the right conditions. That means your mosquito control efforts need to be consistent and strategic.

At Palmetto Exterminators, we've built our mosquito services around the science of the life cycle to keep populations in check before they explode.

Monthly Mosquito Barrier Treatments (March-November)

Our Mosquito Barrier Control service is timed with the start of mosquito season—March through November—to align with the emergence of adult mosquitoes. Our mosquito treatments are applied monthly to create a protective barrier around your property, targeting adult mosquitoes where they rest and breed.

  • Residual protection: Keeps working between visits

  • Strategic application: Treats known mosquito hotspots like shrubs, under decks, and damp, shaded areas

  • Effective Treatment - We use larvacides that target all stages of the mosquito lifecycle.

  • Ideal for: Backyards, patios, pool areas, and outdoor entertaining spaces
