Fall Pest Control Tips
Fall is finally making itself known here in the Carolina’s as temperatures have finally started to drop below 60 degrees. With the change in temperature, comes a brand new list of pest control preventative tips you can add to your daily chores.
At Palmetto Exterminators, we tend to see an increase in the amount of mice, cockroaches, spiders, and other insects during fall months. This can be due to many reasons, but the change in temperature has a lot to do with pests finding a new form of shelter – don’t let it be your home.
To prevent these fall pests from invading your kitchen, home, or attic this winter take these preventative measures this season:
Screen Vents and Openings
Make sure to screen in attic vents and openings to your chimneys, as these are easy entrances that pests can find their way into your home and set up their new humble abode. Take a look at closing off any other areas where your home might be open to the outdoors such as animal doors and mail slots.
Keep Your Home Ventilated and Dry
Take a look at basements, crawl spaces, and attics to ensure that they are ventilated and dry. Areas with moisture have been known to attract pests of all types and are a likely cause of most invasions. Invest in dehumidifiers to keep areas such as basements and garages free from too much moisture.
Seal Cracks and Crevices
This is one of the easiests and fool proof ways to prevent pests from invading your home. Use caulk and steel wool to seal any cracks or crevices that lead to the outside of your home. Be sure to take a close look at utility pipes, windows, and doors.
Keep it Clean
Make sure to keep kitchen counters free of crumbs, immediately put away leftovers and take out your garbage regularly to prevent a Thanksgiving feast for future pests, as they’re always scrounging for food that might’ve accidentally been left behind. Also take a second look at your food stored and make sure containers are properly sealed.
Keep Firewood Away From Your Home
A common mistake most folks make when the temperature drops is storing firewood too close to their homes. Pests commonly hide in firewood and storing it next to your home makes it easy for them to find their next form of shelter. To prevent a possible invasion, store firewood at aleast 20 feet away and make sure to keep shrubbery around the outside of your home trimmed.
