Bed Bug Awareness Week
This pest remains at the top of our list of the most annoying insects and for good reason. The bed bug received their name from their ability to feed on humans in while sleeping from the comfort of their own bed. For bed bug awareness week, the team at Palmetto Exterminators wants to spread the word about how to get rid of bed bugs and prevent them from entering your home. Here’s what you should know about bed bugs:
What is Bed Bug Awareness Week All About?
Bed Bug Awareness Week was created by the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) in an effort to bring awareness to bed bug infestations and prevention prior to the onset of the summer travel season. The PPMA is an investor-driven organization that has been promoting the importance of pest control services for the past 20 years.
Every year, the PPMA picks a specific week to educate the general public about how to prevent and exterminate bed bugs. This year, Bed Bug Awareness week is being recognized June 2nd – 8th and we value the opportunity to build up the awareness of these prevalent creatures.
Why Should I Worry about Bed Bugs?
With bed bug infestations becoming increasingly common, the PPMA uses Bed Bug Awareness week to promote awareness through media strategies on the potentially dangerous impacts of bed bugs.
These pests tend to come alive at night and feed on humans while they sleep. These bed bug bites can lead to a variety of public health issues, from allergic reactions, to infections, to serious mental health implications.
Another major cause for concern with bed bugs is their sheer prevalence during an infestation. The underlying accusation that bed bugs only congregate in your bed is false. In order for homes to be treated properly, we must be aware that bed bugs infest wherever humans may be; sofas, furniture crevices, box springs, wall paper and more.
How to Treat and Prevent the Issue
Proper bed bug prevention practices are outlined in detail by the EPA, and we highly encourage you to follow the instructions closely throughout the summer travel season. If you are concerned that you may already have a bed bug infestation, we encourage you to review the EPA documentation on how to find bed bugs and contact a professional immediately.
From June 2nd – 8th you can help raise awareness by sharing and promoting the PPMA prevention campaigns. You can also follow along with the #BedBugWeek hashtag throughout social media platforms, as well as our own accounts @PalmettoExandMC or take a look at our bed bug orientated services for more information.
