A Guide to Rodent Control
It’s no secret that rodents are unnerving in and around your property. They can damage furniture and transmit diseases while lurking throughout your house. In order to protect your space from a rodent infestation, check out some simple, easy, and inexpensive rodent control tips.
Keep a Clean Space
One of the best ways to control rodent populations around your home is to keep a clean property, both inside and out. Rodents commonly look for food near the garbage. Storing garbage in sealed containers prevents rodents from getting nutrients, so they will have little incentive to return.
In addition to garbage, food sources in your home should also be monitored. Rodents can chew through plastic to get into bread or other snacks, so be aware of the storage and placement of these items. Be sure to remove excess pet food or water each night, because rodents can live on that as well.
Remove Potential Shelters
Rodents need a place to take shelter, so finding and removing potential sources will force them to settle down elsewhere. Some popular nesting spots include abandoned items throughout your property, like old cars or furniture. Other potential housing spots include tall grasses, shrubbery, or other dense greenery. Consider keeping a well-manicured lawn to decrease the chances of rodents hiding inside of it. Trees with limbs extending close to the property should also be cut, so that access into the house becomes more difficult.
Rodent Proof the House
Tiny cracks or gaps in the windows can provide easy access points for rodents. Check for openings that are ¼ of an inch to ½ an inch; even though that might seem extremely small, rodents are skilled at slipping through tight spaces. Windows should be immediately repaired if cracked and doors should be tight to the frame. Don’t forget about screening attic vents as well.
Finding Evidence
There are several warning signs to look out for that indicate rodents have infested your home. If you begin hearing the pitter-patter of tiny feet or gnawing sounds from within your walls, chances are good that you have a rodent control issue. Mice and rats may also leave droppings in their path, which can be traced back to food sources or nesting spots. There may also be bite marks on materials in your home like plastic or aluminum.
How to Get Rid of Them
If rodents have already entered your home, one of the easiest ways to get rid of them is to use traps. Consider placing unset traps out with bait for a few nights so the rodent becomes accustomed to the food source. After several nights, bait the trap again but this time actually set it up. Place the trap in areas where you have seen evidence of rodents and wait.
